Licenses and Prices - Proxy Sniffer Professional Edition
Proxy Sniffer "Professional Edition" licenses are divided into two parts:
- GUI Licenses which allow you to record load tests, to trigger load test jobs, and to display load test results.
- Exec Agent Licenses which allow you to execute load test jobs; that is, these are licenses for load generators.
Licensing Models
The following licensing models are available:
1. Starter Packages
Each Starter Package contains a single GUI license as well as a single Exec Agent license. This licensing model is lower-priced
than standard licenses, but offers less flexibility and adaptability. Starter Packages are usually used by individual persons who
need to release load tests of moderate or medium strength.Please note that the following restrictions apply:

2. Standard GUI Licenses and Standard Exec Agent Licenses
The standard licensing model allows you to install differing number of GUIs and Exec Agents on separate computers, and to use them in a combined manner.
This licensing model is more flexible and is usually used when strong load tests are executed, or when load tests are performed by several members
of a load testing team.Features:

3. Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time Licenses
Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time Licenses can be rented on a weekly basis, and allow you to operate an unlimited number of load generators, and
to simulate an unlimited number of virtual users.In combination with renting this kind of license, you also will be able to start within a few minutes a large number of ready-to-operate load generators running in Amazon's EC2 Cloud. Using the Amazon EC2 Cloud service is optional, as you can also use an Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time License solely on your internal computer systems or - within the same license period - on internal systems as well as simultaneously in the Amazon's EC2 Cloud. The license price is very competitive; however, the use of an Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time License requires that you have already rented or purchased at least one Starter Package or one Standard GUI License with a valid Upgrade + Bug Fix option. The Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time License contains a generic license key for Exec Agents which works for any Windows and Unix-like system. The Exec Agents will accept load test jobs from any computer (from any GUI), and can be combined to form load-generating clusters. |

4. Standard Site License A standard site license allows the installation of an unlimited number of GUIs and Exec Agents on any computer in your company or department, and allows you to run load tests with an unlimited number of simulated users (unlimited standard licensing model). The standard site license contains a generic GUI license key and a generic Exec Agent license key which works on any Windows and Unix-like system. |
Note for Starter Packages and Standard Licenses: the licenses are bound to the computer on which the corresponding component(s) of Proxy Sniffer is (are) installed, and is based on the Windows or Unix system name (hostname). If the product is later transferred to another computer, the license can be changed free of charge once a year.
Note for all licenses: per individual, interactive (natural) user of the product at least one GUI license is necessary.
License Prices
All Starter Packages and Standard Licenses can be purchased either on a permanent basis (permanent licenses), or rented for one year (temporary licenses). "Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time Licenses" can only be rented on a weekly basis. Standard Site Licenses can be purchased, as well as rented, for one year.

| Future upgrades contain both minor as well as major versions. Reported bugs are not seen as support cases, that is to say no service points will be deducted. Exec Agent Licenses
Standard Exec Agent licenses can be combined with both "standard GUI licenses", as well as with "Starter Package" licenses. Standard Exec Agents are usually installed on systems which are exclusively used for generating load tests.

3. Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time Licenses
You can upgrade your Starter Package(s) or Standard GUI License(s) to an Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time License valid for one or several weeks:
- All features of the Professional Edition are fully supported without any restrictions, and include support for load-generating clusters and the remote execution of load tests.
- This license allows you to install and use an unlimited number of Exec Agents - on any computer operated by your company.
- This license allows you to start an unlimited number of pre-installed Exec Agents running in Amazon's EC2 Cloud ¹.
- The number of simulated virtual users is unlimited - per Exec Agent as well as for cluster jobs.

General FAQs about Licensing
| Q: | What is a "Virtual User" ? |
| A: | A virtual user is a simulation of a real user created by our software. Each virtual user emulates an own web browser in such a way that a web application can not see any difference between a real user and a software-generated virtual user. |
| Q: | What does "Simultaneous Virtual Users" mean ? |
| A: | Depending on your license, an Exec Agent limits the number of virtual users which can be simulated at the same time. For example, if an Exec Agent license allows you to simulate 500 virtual users - and you have already started a load test job with 300 users on the Exec Agent - you can also start in parallel another load test job with 200 users, but not with 300 users (300 + 300 > 500) on the same Exec Agent. As soon as a load test job has been completed, or is manually aborted, the corresponding number of virtual users is automatically enabled again. The number of virtual users is counted locally on the Exec Agent over all concurrently executed load tests jobs - irrespective of whether the load test jobs are triggered by the same GUI or by different GUIs. However, Exec Agents of "Starter Packages" only accept jobs from their own local GUI (from their own computer). |
| Q: | How are the "Simultaneous Virtual Users" counted when executing cluster jobs ? |
| A: | There is no cluster-wide managed counter for the number of virtual users. Each cluster member (Exec Agent) controls locally the number of free virtual users. |
| Q: | What does "The license can be split up over a max. of <number> Exec Agents" mean ? |
| A: | For example, if you purchase a Standard Exec Agent license for 2000 virtual users, it is not recommended for you to install only one Exec Agent on one computer system, because the CPU load or the number of available TCP/IP connections of the operating system may be limited in such a way that you will not able to simulate 2000 users from the same computer. Therefore starting from 1000 users, we recommend that you subdivide the Exec Agent license over several systems. The license price remains the same. |
| Q: | What does "the licenses are bound to the computer" mean ? |
| A: | The licenses - or split up licenses - are bound to the computer name (hostname) - or alternatively to the TCP/IP address of the computer - on which the corresponding component of Proxy Sniffer is installed. One license transfer per computer per year is free; for example if a computer is replaced by another one. We also accept license transfers for out-dated Proxy Sniffer versions - even if you do not have a valid upgrade + bug fix option. However a license transfer requires that you uninstall/delete Proxy Sniffer on the old computer. |
| Q: | Do Starter Packages allow me to form load-generating clusters of Exec Agents ? |
| A: | Yes, but not with Exec Agents of other Starter Packages. Starter Packages allow you to form clusters which contain standard licensed Exec Agents as well as Exec Agents operated under a "Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time License ". The local Exec Agent of a Starter Package can also be part of a load-generating cluster. The only restriction on a Starter Package is that the local Exec Agent of the Starter Package does not accept load tests triggered from other computers. |
| Q: | What is a "Support Point" ? |
| A: | Support is provided by e-mail or alternatively by desktop sharing. One support point is equal to 15 minutes of support. Each service call will be counted with a minimum of one support point. Additional packages of 4 support points (one hour) can be ordered for 120 € / 160 USD (exclusive of VAT). Unused support points will not expire as long as a valid upgrade + bug fix option remains without interruption. Unlimited support for starter packages and standard licenses is available on request. Standard site licenses always include unlimited support within the validity period of the upgrade + bug fix option. |
| Q: | Can the "Upgrades + Bug Fixes + Support" option be ordered at any time ? |
| A: | No. You have to order this option at the same time you order Proxy Sniffer. If your "Upgrades + Bug Fixes + Support" option has expired, then you first have to purchase the upgrade for the current product version separately before we will accept your ordering this option again. If you use our product for several years, we recommend that you extend the "Upgrades + Bug Fixes + Support" option without interruption as this is cheaper than buying the current product version each time. |
| Q: | What does the "Upgrades + Bug Fix + Support" option mean, in detail ? |
| A: | Proxy Sniffer is continuously developed since many years. Almost every month, we develop a new release
which contains additional new functionality. All of our customers who have a valid
Upgrades + Bug Fix option receive the latest minor and major releases at no extra cost. However, we don't contact our
customers about new intermediate-versions every month. We normally send our customers an e-mail
just twice a year, and make an "official release" available in the spring and in the autumn. If you report a bug to us - or we discover a serious bug ourselves - then you will receive a new intermediate-version immediately, as soon as the bug has been fixed. |
| Q: | How are Major and Minor Releases labelled ? |
| A: | We use a conservative enumeration for new major releases by only adding a new number after the decimal point. For example, version 4.3 is a new major release compared to version 4.2. Minor releases are labelled by alphabetic characters after the major version. For example, version 4.3-J is a minor release compared to version 4.3-C. The number before the decimal point is only incremented if the recorded web surfing sessions (*.prxdat files) are no longer compatible with an older release. Note: until now, all test results (*.prxres files) since version 3.8 can be loaded with the latest version of Proxy Sniffer. |
FAQs about running Exec Agents on Amazon EC2 Instances
| Q: | What are the additional costs for renting the Amazon's EC2 instances (cloud computers) ? |
| A: | See the rows "Licensing Costs" and "Additional Amazon Costs" in this table to learn more about our actual prices. |
| Q: | Where can I enter the Amazon Activation Key ? |
| A: | This is not required. The Amazon Activation Key is not used by Proxy Sniffer. |
| Q: | Do I have to Install the Exec Agents (load generators) manually ? |
| A: | No, this is not required. They are already pre-installed in the cloud. You have only to select and start (launch) the Amazon-based load generators by using the Proxy Sniffer GUI. Normally the launched load generators are ready-to-use in less than 3 minutes. |
| Q: | Do I get Root Access on pre-installed Exec Agents ? |
| A: | No. You cannot login on pre-installed Exec Agents. |
| Q: | Can I access a pre-installed Exec Agent via an Outbound HTTP/S Proxy of my company ? |
| A: | Yes, but not in every case.
Accessing Exec Agents via an Outbound Proxy is only possible if either "no authentication" or
"Basic Authentication" is supported by your Outbound HTTP/S Proxy. All other authentication
methods against outbound HTTP/S Proxy servers are not supported.
Hint: if your stressed web application is located inside your company, you should not use the same leased line to the internet to control the load generating Exec Agents in the Amazon's cloud. In case of overloading the leased line caused by a load test you will no longer be able to control the Exec Agents or to abort the load test. Additionally, all the data traffic of your company to and from the internet may be blocked. Therefore we strongly recommend in such a case that you use a second direct internet connection to control the Exec Agents in the Amazon's cloud by using plain TCP/IP connections (Exec Agent Port 7993). It is also supported to use a slow mobile internet connection such as GSM to control the Exec Agents. |
| Q: | I have recorded my web surfing session by using an outbound proxy, but my load test does not run on Amazon ! |
| A: | Please generate your load test program again, but this time disable the option "Load Test over HTTP(S) Proxy". After that it will work. |
| Q: | How can I verify that the CPU of a pre-installed Exec Agent is not overloaded ? |
| A: | You can monitor the CPU usage of an Exec Agent by entering http://<public DNS name> of an EC2 instance into your web browser. You will see a time chart about the CPU usage. In case of overload you should launch more Amazon instances. |
| Q: | Why always two Exec Agents are added for each started load generator ? |
| A: | This is because on Amazon cloud computers the threads of one load generating process cannot be distributed over more than one Amazon CPU core. Therefore to get the full power of the Amazon instances, two Exec Agents are added for each launched instance. |
| Q: | Can I launch several pre-installed Exec Agents ? |
| A: | Yes. Amazon allows you to start up to 20 instances. |
| Q: | Can I build a Load-Generating Cluster of pre-installed Exec Agents ? |
| A: | Yes. This is automatically done when starting the Amazon load generators by using the Proxy Sniffer GUI. |
| Q: | How many web users can be simulated per Amazon load generator? |
| A: | Depending on your test scenario, up to 600 - 4800 web users can be simulated per Amazon load generator. |
| Q: | Is it permitted to give other persons access to use the Exec Agents ? |
| A: | Yes, but only for persons of your own company or own organization. You also have to consider
the restrictions written in the End User License Agreement. |
| Q: | We have already rented or purchased "Standard Licenses". Do we get a discount for renting a "Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time License" ? |
| A: | No. |
| Q: | We have already rented or purchased a "Standard Site License". Are there any additional license costs for using the pre-installed Exec Agents on Amazon's EC2 Cloud ? |
| A: | Yes, but they are low. You have to pay an additional 600 Euro / 850 USD per year as a contribution to us for maintaining the AMIs. Note: that does not apply to customers who rent an "Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time License" (using the AMI of pre-installed Exec Agents is already included in the price of short-time licenses). |
| Q: | We have rented or purchased multiple Starter Packages or GUI licenses - can all Starter Packages and GUI licenses use the same "Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time License" ? |
| A: | Yes, one "Unlimited Exec Agent Short-Time License" can be used from all Starter Packages and from all GUIs, as long as each Starter Package and/or each GUI is licensed with a currently valid "Upgrades + Bug Fixes + Support" option. |
